Using the right tools is essential for properly cutting and installing mouldings.
While you don’t need the most expensive, top-of-the-line tools, avoid buying the cheapest ones since they often lack precision and stability.
My List Depending on the scope and nature of your project, not all tools may be needed. However, installing crown mouldings and casings typically requires more materials.
Saw and mitre box (a finishing blade with 80 teeth or more will ensure a cleaner cut)*
Hammer and headless nails in various lengths*
Measuring tape
Universal bevel protractor
Bevel square
Level or laser
Nail set
Wood filler
Sandpaper
Latex sealant
Masking tape
*A saw, a 10" sliding mitre box and a pneumatic nailer are strongly recommended. A finishing blade with 80 teeth or more will ensure a cleaner cut.
Basic safety rules
Always wear safety goggles.
Work on a sturdy table or workbench. If you are working with 12 ft. MDF moulding, for example, weight could be a problem. Be sure to use supports or a side table to prop up the ends.
